What A Year Living In Mexico Taught Me

6 Lessons Learned Living In Mexico

Peso Wisdom

We all get tired of things, people and places at times and well —I was TIRED of New York City. I’ll never forget Summer 2019. It felt like the city that made me had no more to give. Life seemed like this endless struggle boat and then the plandemic hit. By June 2020, remote work, social distancing and fear changed us forever - and my mental health was once again in jeopardy.

My friends often would joke and compare my life to Carrie Bradshaw and Being Mary Jane because of all the twists and turns and lessons gushing drama in business and IRL. I didn’t fully understand them until I looked at my life outside of myself. I had that gut wrenching moment that whispered to me that I’m in control of my reality. Was I really going to be on some Eat. Pray. Love ish I asked myself? That mirrored reflection of reading Elizabeth Taylor and knowing just how enriching her time away was the confirmation my inner child needed.

If I wanted to grow, I knew I needed to trust my intuition. I craved space, peace, and a sun-drenched remote work life. September 2020 (exactly the day after celebrating my Virgo mom’s birthday) I bought a one way ticket to Cancun and left my ghetto pandemic reality and turned to life in Mexico. My 16-month nomadic journey living across three different cities in Quintana Roo, Mexico began in Tulum. I tried something new, like living with an international remote community at Mayan Monkey for a month. As some of you may know, Tulum and Playa del Carmen are vortex grounds for rejuvenation, self acceptance and inner work.

Some things I’ve learned since:

  1. No matter where you are in the world - you will attract people and events based on your beliefs and subconscious…

  2. Do not deny yourself the opportunity to create joy through a new reality

  3. Oceans distance between toxic love reveal skeletons…

  4. Living with the sun or in tropical weather should be a life mandate…

  5. In indigenous holy lands, ancestors speak through the winds of nature…

  6. Wearing a red strings around our ankles protect us from muertos (bad spirits)…

  7. Give yourself the permission to die as many times as you need, who’s keeping count anyway?

I’m thankful to Mexico, it’s people and it’s culture for being a bridge over troubled waters. When I return, my Mexico City chapter will begin.
